harndenAlbany City Manager Peter Troedsson has extended a conditional job offer to Bellevue, Wash., Police Captain Marcia Harnden to be Albany’s next chief of police. Troedsson announced his choice today, following a detailed and extensive search, recruitment, interview and selection process. The offer is conditioned on Harnden successfully passing a background check.

Harnden has been with Bellevue Police since 1993, serving in positions including lieutenant, corporal and public information officer. She is currently a captain in patrol and investigations there.

In a message to Albany Police Department staff today, Troedsson said, “I received substantial input from police officers, city staff, and community members.  All of this information was used to help select from a final field of four highly capable police professionals.  I’m grateful not only for the four candidates who made it to the final round, but also for all of you who took such an active interest in the process and invested the time in sending me your thoughts.”

Other finalists for the chief’s job were Brad Liles, Albany; Marc Denney, La Center, Wash.; and Shane McSheehy, Umatilla, Florida. They were among 29 applicants from a nationwide search; 15 were interviewed in October, and the field was narrowed to four.

Mario Lattanzio, Albany chief since 2013, is retiring January 31, 2020.
